Flood Insurance Information
and Elevation Certificates

Know Your Zone is a public education campaign implemented by the Monmouth County Office of Emergency Management to inform the residents, businesses and visitors of Monmouth County of the new hurricane evacuation zones and their vulnerability to storm surge. The Know Your Zone campaign was developed in partnership with the municipal emergency management coordinators within the coastal towns and is based on the threat, strength direction and forecasted storm surge of an impending hurricane, nor’easter or other coastal flooding event. The campaign also reflects the National Hurricane Center’s (NHC) decision to separate the association of storm surge inundation from the category of storm.

Flood Insurance
Standard Homeowner’s Insurance Policies do not cover losses due to floods. However, Sea Bright is a participant in the National Flood Insurance Program, which makes it possible for Sea Bright Property Owners to obtain federally backed flood insurance. This insurance is available to any owner of insurable property (a building or its contents) in Sea Bright. Tenants may also insure their personal property against flood loss. The Borough encourages all property owners or renters to carry flood insurance. The cost of flood insurance will vary depending upon the amount of coverage and the degree of flood hazard. We urge persons who live or own property in Sea Bright to purchase flood insurance to protect themselves from losses due to flooding. This insurance is required in certain circumstances, such as the purchase of a home with a federally backed mortgage.
PLEASE NOTE: If there is a Flood-Insurance Policy lapse for any reason (sale, cancellation, etc.), any new policy will be based on the current rating system and will not be “Grand fathered”. In the event of a sale, policyholders must transfer coverage to the purchaser to provide flood insurance coverage at the “Grand fathered” (lower) rate.
Note: There is a 30-day waiting period before most flood insurance policies go into effect.

Flood Safety / Flood Warning System
First and foremost, the safety of every person in the Borough is a priority in an emergency situation. Please familiarize yourself with these procedures, safety tips, and evacuation plans. In a storm or flood emergency, there will be a Nixle Alert sent to notify the affected areas of town impacted by the emergency event.

The Police Department and Emergency Management personnel will also go street to street with a public announcement system to insure all persons are aware of the nature of the emergency and announce any mandatory evacuations. In the event that a radio is not available, or you do not hear the emergency announcements, please call the
Monmouth County Office of Emergency Management at 732-431-7400.

If a formal notice of evacuation is ordered, it is mandatory and is a law that must be obeyed! This is for your safety, so please cooperate with Police and Emergency Management personnel. If you are unable to evacuate, please contact the
Sea Bright Police Department at 732-842-0010 for assistance.

1. WHEN LEAVING YOUR HOME, TURN OFF THE GAS, WATER AND ELECTRICITY, IF POSSIBLE.
2. PLEASE WATCH YOUR CHILDREN CAREFULLY AND DO NOT ALLOW THEM NEAR FLOOD WATERS OR OTHER HAZARDS.
3. DO NOT WADE THROUGH MOVING FLOODWATERS AND STAY CLEAR OF LAKE AND RIVER BANKS, BEACHES AND THE INLET.
4. BE VERY CAUTIOUS OF DRIVING THROUGH MOVING FLOODWATERS AND IF YOUR VEHICLE SHOULD BECOME DISABLED IN HIGH WATER, ABANDON IT AND MOVE TO HIGHER GROUND OR SEEK ASSISTANCE.

All families should practice emergency preparedness. During hurricane and storm season you should be prepared for evacuation by having ready the following {keeping a checklist in a handy location is very helpful}: first aid supplies, flashlights with additional batteries, battery operated radio with additional batteries, supply of drinking water and non-perishable food, a sturdy box (lock box or portable safe) to transport important papers, insurance information, passports, checks, cash, jewelry, photos, etc.: clothing, shoes and bedding for each person; medications; pets and pet food plus safety equipment for pets (leashes, collars, crates), chargers for cell phones. You may also want to take books, games, or activities. Keep a full tank of gas in your evacuation vehicle, and make sure it is in good running order.

EVACUATION ROUTES
All north beach evacuating traffic will utilize Ocean Avenue (Route 36) northbound to the Borough of Highlands or southbound to Rumson Road (Route 520) depending on the areas impacted. All south beach evacuating traffic will utilize Ocean Avenue (Route 36) northbound to Rumson Road (Route 520) or Ocean Avenue (Route 36) southbound into the Borough of Monmouth Beach depending on the areas impacted. Please follow the directions of the Police and Emergency Personnel who will be guiding vehicles out of town as orderly and as expediently as possible.

When deemed necessary, all Emergency Personnel will be moved from their various stations out of town. For further information on evacuation routes, please visit:
