Ocean Rescue Lifeguards

MISSION STATEMENT

The mission of Sea Bright Ocean Rescue is to provide exemplary, world-class lifeguard services, hazard mitigation, and water rescue for the residents of and visitors to the borough beaches of
Sea Bright New Jersey.

BRIEF HISTORY

The first documented history we have of lifeguards protecting Sea Bright’s public beaches began in the mid 1940’s.  To date, the actual number of lives saved by our ocean lifeguards is unknown, yet it is safe to say that we are lucky to have these professionals in our Boro.  Sea Bright Ocean Rescue is comprised of professionals who provide a vital service along the north Monmouth County coast.

During the summer of 2015 our municipal lifeguards pulled over 100 people from the Atlantic Ocean and prevented well over 1,200 dangerous incidents.  It is also of note, that Sea Bright lifeguards provided emergency medical aid to over 120 people, coordinated two critical underwater search and recovery operations  and reunited 22 lost or missing children.

Sea Bright Ocean Rescue is an ocean lifeguard program certified by the USLA (United States Lifesaving Association) and the NJ State Department of Health.  SBOR responds to emergencies covering 4 miles of public ocean front beach. Lifeguards are stationed at pre-established public beach areas starting Memorial Day Weekend from 9 am to 5 pm.  Sea Bright’s protected beaches remain staffed until Labor Day weekend.

SBOR’s mission profile includes prevention of injury and disability, high surf rescue, river rescue,      underwater search recovery, and first responder emergency medical services. Sea Bright also staffs experienced senior ocean lifeguards as part of a reactionary USLA qualified aquatic response rescue team identified as the SRT (Surf Rescue Team.)

Sea Bright’s lifeguards are the most important part of our agency. Each lifeguard rookie completes over 75 hours of rigorous training and testing in order to earn their place on the team.  Our returning recurrent ocean lifeguards complete 24 hours of training every summer season. Each lifeguard is CPR-AED certified and all personnel are aquatic medical first responders.

If any member of the public has any questions at all please contact the Sea Bright Public Beach Operations Manager or the Sea Bright Ocean Rescue Captain.
